FAQ?  VOIP and Alarm Systems
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)

Alarm systems, medical alert systems, fire alarm systems, are in most cases analog devices, using analog signals to transmit data to Central Stations.  The data that is transferred is then translated  into alpha numeric communications that identify the event, such as:  "BURGLAR ALARM ZONE 1 FRONT DOOR RIGHT SIDE".  These signals have been communicated via analog telephone signals.  More and more alarm system subscribers are migrating to Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services provided by companies like, Vonage, T-Mobile, ComCast, etc.  These services are typically bundled with digital high speed Internet and wireless service products.  Most alarm companies do not recommend connecting alarm panels to VOIP.  The main concern stems from "dropped" signals, or alarm signals that is caught in a VOIP "cloud" and not transmitted in a timely manner.

So, how does the implementation of VOIP service effect my alarm monitoring service?

In most cases, the VOIP provider, will install a box, say a logic box, that connects all phone jacks within a structure.  Ideally, the VOIP provider has been informed by the alarm service subscriber and has included the alarm system jack (RJ31X), into the configuration.   We have provided the following "Basic VOIP and Alarm Systems" article for your information, please download by clicking on the link below.

Other solutions?  You, bet!  Wireless communicators can be purchased separately and added to your existing system.  There are many products and service providers.  We tend to lean toward DSC products, GSM3060, as an example.  This device can monitor an existing phone line, and be programmed, when the line is cut or their is a power outage and your router goes down, to send any alarm signal via radio, or wireless communication.  We use AT&T services for our customers that would rather not have a standard analog phone line.  Call for more details and system compatiblilty:  1-877-421-0280.
